Greater Noida (7 July 2025): In an inspiring celebration of Van Mahotsav, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Alumni Association, NCR Chapter, joined hands with the Human Touch Foundation to organize a tree plantation drive in the green belt area of Greater Noida. The initiative, held on Sunday, aimed to promote environmental awareness while fostering community participation, especially among young children from underprivileged backgrounds.

The plantation drive featured a variety of native trees, including amla, jamun, and other indigenous fruit- and shade-bearing species, selected for their ecological sustainability, cultural relevance, and nutritional value. Conducted at the onset of the monsoon season, the timing was carefully chosen to maximize the survival and healthy growth of the saplings.

A notable aspect of the event was the active involvement of children from nearby villages, brought together through the efforts of the Human Touch Foundation. The young participants were not only engaged in planting trees but were also educated about the importance of environmental conservation through interactive sessions with the alumni. To add to the festive spirit, the children were served nutritious snacks provided by the volunteers.

This drive is more than just planting trees—it’s about building a greener, more conscious community, said a spokesperson for the IISc Alumni NCR Chapter. Involving children in this initiative aligns with our belief in nurturing future generations who are both informed and environmentally responsible. It also embodies the IISc ethos of applying science and knowledge for societal benefit.

The alumni chapter emphasized that the plantation was not a one-off event. Members have committed to regularly monitoring the growth and health of the saplings to ensure that the green cover flourishes in the years ahead. The long-term stewardship plan includes community engagement and follow-up visits, reinforcing a culture of environmental responsibility.

Van Mahotsav, India’s annual tree planting festival observed in the first week of July, serves as a reminder of the country’s deep-rooted relationship with nature. This initiative by the IISc Alumni NCR Chapter not only honored that tradition but also turned it into a tangible, forward-looking action with lasting impact.

With the collaboration of dedicated volunteers and spirited young participants, the event stood out as a shining example of how educational institutions and civil society can come together to promote sustainable development and climate consciousness at the grassroots level.
