India slams Chinese blockade on Pak Terrorist at UN

New Delhi, 21st June 2023: Indian authorities today lashed out at China’s move to block a proposal at the UN to designate Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Sajid Mir, wanted for his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, as a global terrorist.

India confirmed that the proposal did not get through the UN despite repeated attempts and several member states co-sponsoring it. The country officials further added that they were concerned and firmly believed something was ‘genuinely wrong with the global counter-terrorism architecture.’

This comes as Beijing vetoed a proposal by the United States and India to designate Sajid Mir as a global terrorist under the UN Security Council’s 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee and subject him to asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes.

Sajid Mir is one of India’s most wanted terrorists, with a $5 million US bounty on his head for his role in the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26. China had earlier put a hold on the proposal to designate him as a global terrorist in September and now has blocked the proposal altogether.

Mir was jailed for 15 years in a Pakistan prison in June last year for his involvement in a terror-financing case. Pakistani authorities later claimed Mir had died, but Western countries remained unconvinced and demanded proof of his death.
