New Delhi, 20th June 2023: IndiGo and Air India have placed orders for 970 planes this year in less than five months, reflecting the two airlines’ ambitious expansion ambitions and the Indian aviation market’s growth potential.

Indian carrier orders for planes are projected to climb further, with Akasa Air expected to place a three-digit aircraft order by the end of this year.

IndiGo confirmed a formal order for 500 narrow-body planes with Airbus on Monday, in one of the largest aircraft orders by an airline.

IndiGo now operates over 300 planes. It has 480 aircraft on order, which will be delivered between now and the end of the decade. “With this additional firm order of 500 aircraft for 2030-2035, IndiGo’s order book now contains nearly 1,000 aircraft that will be delivered well into the next decade,” the airline said.

Tata Group-owned Air India had already signed a definitive order for 470 planes with Airbus and Boeing in February. Airbus will supply 250 of them, while Boeing will supply 220, possibly purchasing an additional 370 planes from both companies. The firm order consists of 70 wide-body aircraft.
