Delhi, Sept 9th, 2022: In a major breakthrough, India’s first indigenous MRI machine was recently launched by a team of scientists at New Delhi’s Inter-Univesity Accelerator Centre(IUAC) led by the director of Allahabad University, Prof. Avinash Pandey.
A superconducting magnet system has been used in the MRI system for a full-body clinical scan.
At present, India completely depends on countries like China for the import of MRI machines to our country. The IUAC has broken barriers and created a 1.5 Tesla superconducting MRI magnet system, which is the heart of the MRI machine.
Former President of Indian Radiology & Imaging Association(IRIA) and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Harsh Mahajan lauded the new development and said “India’s first MRI machine is nothing less than creating state-of-the-art indigenous weaponry. Having our own MRI machine would not only cut down the cost of equipment but also provide scanning facilities at a cheaper price to people to cannot afford the same”.
Professor Avinash Pandey remarked that several manufacturers in India are willing to adopt this indigenous technique of developing MRI machines. “We can create lighter and cheaper body scanners which would be a huge leap for rural healthcare in India”, he said.
