Greater Noida, March 11: On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the spotlight turns to the extraordinary women who defy conventions and rewrite the rules. Among them stands Sweety Sharma, a testament to perseverance and passion, whose journey from cricket fields to powerlifting platforms inspires millions.

In the realm of sports, Jammu & Kashmir has produced a galaxy of female stars. From para archers to cricketers, gymnasts to fencers, the region boasts a rich tapestry of talent that challenges stereotypes and pushes boundaries. Among these luminaries, Sweety Sharma shines brightly, carving her niche with dedication and determination.

Sweety’s tryst with sports commenced in her fifth standard when she first graced the volleyball court, representing her school in inter-school competitions. However, it was during her 10th standard that fate intervened dramatically. Encouraged by her school, DBN, she tried out for the National cricket team and not only secured a spot but also clinched the title of the best fielder in her debut national tournament held at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

From that pivotal moment, Sweety Sharma’s journey was marked by brilliance. She competed at various levels – state, national, zonal, university, Rani Jhansi tournaments – representing Jammu & Kashmir and even earned a coveted spot in the India Camp.

Despite the rigors of academic pursuits, including obtaining a law degree from Jammu University, and later juggling marriage and a job, Sweety remained steadfast in her passion for sports.

Relocating to Delhi, Sweety seized the opportunity to play for Railways but ultimately found her calling at the Container Corporation of India, a navratna PSU where her husband was already employed. She even donned the colors of the CONCOR Men’s team and served as a selector on occasions, showcasing her expertise and dedication to the sport.

Yet, Sweety’s odyssey didn’t culminate there. Fueled by an unwavering commitment to fitness and a relentless drive to push her boundaries, she ventured into powerlifting at the age of 48. Inspired by her ease in lifting heavy weights during gym sessions, she embarked on a new chapter in her sporting career.

With grit and determination, Sweety Sharma achieved remarkable success in powerlifting, clinching numerous accolades including gold and silver medals at state and national championships. Her recent triumphs include winning gold in the PI National Bench Press Championship and being bestowed with the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2023.

As Sweety Sharma prepares to represent India in the upcoming World Bench Press Championship in Texas, USA, her journey stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for women worldwide. Despite the challenges of balancing personal, professional, and sporting commitments, she continues to defy expectations and set new standards of excellence.
