New Delhi, August 28, 2023: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reported a significant development in the Chandrayaan-3 mission as the Pragyaan rover identified a 4-meter diameter crater located 3 meters ahead of its designated location on the lunar surface.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), ISRO stated, “On August 27, 2023, the Rover came across a 4-meter diameter crater positioned 3 meters ahead of its location. The Rover was commanded to retrace the path. It’s now safely heading on a new path.”
This revelation marks a notable episode in India’s space exploration journey. On August 23, India achieved a historic milestone when the Chandrayaan-3 lander module successfully touched down on the moon’s South Pole. This achievement effectively concluded the previous setback caused by the Chandrayaan-2 crash landing four years ago.
India’s accomplishment places it in the esteemed league of nations that have effectively landed on the moon’s surface, joining the ranks of the United States, China, and Russia. The successful Chandrayaan-3 mission underscores India’s growing prowess in space technology and exploration.
The discovery of the crater by the Pragyaan rover highlights the meticulous and groundbreaking nature of ISRO’s lunar mission. The space agency’s ability to swiftly adapt and navigate challenges encountered by the rover reinforces its commitment to advancing space exploration.
With this latest development, the Chandrayaan-3 mission continues to captivate global attention, signifying India’s determination to expand its footprint in the realm of space exploration.
