Joint meeting of officials held to enhance safety & security of Yamuna e-way

GREATER NOIDA: In order to enhance safety and security along the 165-km Yamuna Expressway, a meeting was held of senior officials of theYamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), police officials from Mathura and Jaypee group. The 5-point plan implemented to rein in accidents and crime last month was reviewed and police officials were directed to intensify enforcement on the e-way. Officials of Jaypee group, the concessionaire of the high-speed stretch were also directed to put into place several infrastructure enhancements to assist commuters to have a smooth drive along the high-speed corridor.

According to YEIDA officials, meetings to review the safety and security along the e-way are to be held every third Wednesday of the month. “This was the second spot meeting, which was held at Mathura toll plaza,” said Amarnath Upadhyay, Additional CEO (ACEO), YEIDA. “The first meeting was held in August at the Jewar toll plaza. The idea is to conduct a spot inspection and address issues of speed, lacking infrastructure and resolve them immediately with the officials present,” the ACEO told TOI. “The next meeting is scheduled to be held at Agra in October,” he added.

Upadhyay told TOI that officials of the police and Jaypee group have been hauled up for not putting into place an effective WhatsApp group, which was to be formed to reduce incidents of over-speeding vehicles along the e-way. “The group has been put into place but is non-functional. Its members include officials from the state police, the concessionaire of the expressway, traffic police, security personnel and PCR van staff,” he said. “I have asked the Jaypee officials to have this group functional immediately and to start fining road violators. Data of speeding vehicles is to be shared and uploaded every ten minutes on this group, so that exemplary action can be taken by the relevant authorities every ten minutes. Photographs of vehicles driving in the wrong direction will also be uploaded here. The aim is to deter traffic rule violators,” he added.

Officials further said that though the concessionaire had repaired all CCTV cameras and speed guns, which had become non-functional, commuters were still facing rude jerks because of disrepair of the black top of the e-way. “This has to be fixed by Jaypee before October 30, while four accesses to the e-way have to be provided near the Bajna cut immediately,” Upadhyay said.

“If any vehicles are found to be parked wrongly along the eating joints or at any other location, the police has been directed to take strict action against them as they pose a serious threat to other commuters using the e-way,” he said. “Road users who use unauthorized cuts to avoid travelling long distances to take a U-turn will also be heavily fined. Buses will also be directed to stop at designated stops to pick up and drop passengers,” he added. “

“Even though Jaypee officials have started holding a road safety workshop on every 5th of the month to educate road users on safe driving conditions, we have also asked them to increase patrolling vehicles along the e-way in the next three days,” Upadhyay said.
