Lady becomes victim of Wrong Side Driving Menace, short-staffed NTP failing to curb traffic violations

Wrong side driving is one of the most common traffic violation in Noida, followed closely by red-light jumping and over speeding. While Noida Traffic Police attempts to organize some drives to penalize the violators and make people aware about the effect of following traffic rules, the effect on ground hasn’t been much positive.
Wrong side driving has often led to many accidents yet Noida’s commuters habit of indulging in it doesn’t seems to be ending. Today morning also in an unfortunate incident, a lady resident from Silicon City sector 76 was badly hit by a wrong lane driving auto. The auto was driving on the wrong side and hit the lady while she was returning after dropping child for school bus.
The accident happened right outside silicon city sector 76 gate number one. The residents immediately transferred the injured lady to a private hospital. The lady has reportedly sustained many injuries and her collar bone has been fractured.
Commenting on the issue a lady resident Chhaya Rai said, “The opening between divider shall be closed during peak hours or during children school timing as it’s quite dangerous and provokes people to go wrong side for saving time and creating chaos or at-least during morning and noon when children move out for school and comes back there should be traffic police there”.
The residents of the society are in deep anguish over the issue and want strict actions against the auto driver as well as permanent solution of the problem.
While expressing sorrow over the accident, an NTP source on condition of anonymity said that while there has been regular attempts to penalize and discourage the traffic violators, the menace remains quite prevalent in the city. There is also excessive shortage of traffic staff for the very large geographical area. While continuous penalty drive at most intersections and round-about can only discourage these violations, the short-staffed NTP may only be able to do it at much smaller area and hence the effects might not be as good as desired.
