Man killed on train for allegedly carrying beef, railway police say fight over seats

Passengers on board a Mathura-bound train allegedly stabbed a man to death and injured two of his cousins on suspicion that they were carrying beef, police said on Friday.

Junaid and his two brothers – Hashim and Shaqir — were returning home to Haryana’s Ballabhgarh after shopping for Eid in Delhi’s Sadar Bazar on Thursday. They boarded the Mathura-bound Ghaziabad-Delhi-Mathura train but a heated dispute broke out between the group and new passengers near Okhla station over seats, police said.

“As they were returning home, they had an argument over meat with a group of co-passengers, which took an ugly turn and they were attacked with knife. The injured were rushed to the hospital where one person died,” a Delhi Police official said, who refused to be identified.

However, the Government Railway Police denied the reports, saying the dispute had broken out over sharing seats.

Junaid’s postmortem was being conducted in at the civil hospital in Haryana’s Palwal and his two brothers were still critical, GRP station house officer Ajay Kumar said.

“Based on the statement of Hashim, a case has been registered against unknown persons,” Kumar said.
