New Delhi: E Sreedharan, popularly called as Metro Man urged PM Modi to not agree with the government’s free-travel proposal for women. Delhi metro involve cost of Rs.1000 crore/annum which is also increasing. this makes metro dependent on state govt. and condition of metro may be declined.
In his letter to the Prime Minister on June 10,Sreedharan wrote, “One shareholder cannot take a unilateral decision to give concession to one section of community and push Delhi Metro in to inefficiency and bankruptcy. I don’t want to intervene in the working of the Delhi Metro, but the Delhi government’s decision has forced him to come forward”.
He added that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also bought a ticket when he went to inaugurate the first section of the Metro on December 23, 2002.
“Now, if ladies are to be given free travel concession in Delhi Metro, it would set an alarming precendence to all other Metros in the country. The argument of Delhi Govt that the revenue losses would be reimbursed to DMRC is a poor solace. The amount involved in about 1,000 crores per annum today. This will go on increasing as the Metro network expands and with further fare hikes on the Metro,” he wrote.
Delhi Deputy CM, Manish Sisodia
responding to ‘Metro Man’, letter said,
“I have written to Sreedharan sahib and told him that DelhiMetro is running in losses. It’s carrying capacity is 40 lakh passengers everyday but presently it’s carrying only 25 lakh passengers.”
“Surprised and pained by your letter. Your stand appears to be a result of a misunderstanding about the Delhi govt’s proposal,” wrote Sisodia in his letter to Sreedharan.
