Mukul Rohatgi to return for a second stint as Attorney General of India

Delhi, Sept 13th, 2022: Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, who held the post of India’s Attorney General from 2014 to 2017 is likely to return in October this year.

The current Attorney General, the Indian government’s chief legal advisor is K.K. Venugopal who was appointed by former President of India Ram Nath Kovind in 2020.

Venugopal’s extended tenure ends on September 30. He served as the Centre’s top law officer for five years.
91-year-old Venugopal had requested that he be relieved of his post citing his advancing age.

Mukul Rohatgi will begin his second stint on October 1st. He has also served as Additional Solicitor General of India in the past.

Even after Rohatgi left office in June 2017, the government consulted him on sensitive legal issues including the scrapping of Article 370 which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

One of India’s most high-profile lawyers, Rohatgi has several important cases to his credit, including the Gujarat riots case.
More recently, Rohatgi led the defense team of Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, who was arrested in the drugs-on-cruise case.
