New Delhi : With India geared up to achieve targets of Tuberculosis (TB) under Sustainable Development Goal in the country by 2025, several strategies have been set in place to help overcome this disease. One of the flagship efforts is the Nikshay Poshan Yojana – implemented by the Government since April 2018.

The Nikshay Poshan Yojana has been set with purpose of monetary assistance to TB patients for nutrition needs. By way of conditional cash transfer through direct benefit transfers, the scheme is also expected to deliver in addressing out-of-pocket expenditure of TB patients, increase notification and mobilize patients for completion of treatment. The Government has reported a total of 10,795 beneficiaries who have been assisted by this scheme with a total amount of Rs 1, 21, 52,000 in Delhi. There is however, still scope for more individuals to be enveloped under this scheme. Lack of awareness about the scheme on the part of the patients and the stigma surrounding the disease remain two of the major reasons why more patients have not been able to take full advantage of the Nikshay Poshan Yojana.

“Unlike most of the diseases that plague our generation today, Tuberculosis is one that can be overcome by following the treatment protocols laid by the doctor and a strict vigilance over the progress of the disease. It is the prime duty and responsibility of TB afflicted individuals and the medical fraternity to make use of all available resources to become a TB free nation. The Nikshay Poshan Yojana offers the required medical, nutritional and financial support that is required to help see a patient through his TB treatment,” says Dr. R V Asokan, Secretary General, and Indian Medical Association.

It is our duty to help spread the message and generate more awareness on the importance of TB notification and the multiple support measures offered by the government to End TB in India. The Indian Medical Association has been an active player with the government to help propagate the message.
