Greater Noida (19 April 2025): The 59th edition of the IHGF Delhi Fair, one of the world’s largest fairs for home, lifestyle, fashion, furniture, and textiles, organized by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), commenced at the India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida. The fair was officially inaugurated by Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Textiles, Government of India, who also toured the exhibition halls and interacted with various participants, showcasing India’s rich handicraft heritage.
In an exclusive conversation with Ten News Network during a prominent trade fair, Parminder Singh Gulati, founder of Old Village Overseas, shared his entrepreneurial journey and the unique appeal of his fashion products, which have earned global recognition over the past 25 years.
Established in 1998, Old Village Overseas is a Delhi-based family-run business specializing in fashion scarves and garments. Parminder Singh Gulati and his wife have grown the enterprise from a modest start into an internationally successful export firm, now serving over 300 customers across the globe.
We started as a small family business, said Gulati. Today, we export 100% of our products worldwide. We’re not currently catering to the Indian market, as our focus has always been on exports since day one.
Gulati credits his entry into the export business to the economic conditions of the early 1990s. When India faced the Balance of Payments crisis in 1990, I was completing my graduation. My professors and advisors encouraged me to support the country through exports—to earn foreign exchange and strengthen the economy. That advice stayed with me.
Initially starting with handicrafts, Gulati soon identified a niche in scarves and fashion garments. We were among the first few companies in Delhi to begin exporting shawls and scarves. Over time, we carved a reputation for high-quality fashion accessories with traditional Indian craftsmanship.
Discussing the uniqueness of their offerings, Gulati emphasized the importance of handcrafted Indian techniques. We mainly work with natural fibers, which are in high demand globally. Our strength lies in hand embroidery, block printing, and other traditional techniques. These are skills China can’t replicate, so we don’t face much competition in that niche.
He added that demand for their products is heavily influenced by international fashion trends and seasonal changes. Fashion is dynamic. What’s in trend one year may fade the next, so we keep evolving.
Gulati expressed satisfaction with the fair’s outcome, noting a strong response from international buyers. The feedback has been very positive. Considering the current global economic scenario, we’ve received more interest than expected, which is encouraging for the future.
Old Village Overseas continues to represent the strength of India’s traditional craftsmanship on the global stage, while contributing to the country’s export economy.
IHGF Delhi Fair, running from April 16 to 19, 2025, continues to be a vibrant showcase of Indian craftsmanship and a vital networking hub for exporters and international buyers. With participation from thousands of artisans and over 3,000 exhibitors, the fair covers a wide range of product categories including home décor, textiles, furniture, fashion jewelry, and accessories.
Provisional export figures for handicrafts during the financial year 2024-25 stand at Rs. 33,490.79 Crores (US $3959.86 Million), according to Mr. R. K. Verma, Executive Director of EPCH – a testament to the growing global appeal of India’s artisanal heritage. As the fair unfolds, exhibitors continue to push the boundaries of creativity, sustainability, and craftsmanship, strengthening India’s position in the global handicraft marketplace.
