Over 1.2 lakh people affected by Assam Floods

Guwahati, 22nd June 2023: Authorities confirmed that the flood in Assam remained grave on Wednesday, with almost 1.20 lakh people affected by the downpour across 20 districts.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports, due to severe rainfall in Assam, adjacent states, and bordering country Bhutan, the water levels of various rivers have risen above the danger level and swamped new areas.

Over 780 villages under 45 revenue villages of Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Udalguri districts are said to have been affected by the floods. Urban floods have also been reported Bajali, Darrang, Kamrup (Metro), Kokrajhar and Nalbari districts.

The water level of the Beki River is also flowing above the danger level mark at Road Bridge, Pagladiya at Nt Road Crossing and Puthimari River at Nh Road Crossing.

The ASDMA reports also added that the district administrations have established 14 relief camps and 17 relief distribution centres, where a total of 2091 individuals have sought refuge in relief camps in the districts of Baksa, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, and Tamulpur.

Over 1.07 lakh household animals and poultry were also affected by the first flood spell in the flood-stricken districts.

The officials also added that the NDRF, SDRF, and Fire & Emergency Services are currently in rescue operations to evacuate 1280 people from flood-hit areas.
