National News (02/09/2026): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed India’s stronger-than-expected 7.8 per cent economic growth in the April-June quarter, attributing the performance to the collective efforts and resilience of the people despite geopolitical conflicts, global instability and disruptions to supply chains.
In a video message shared on Instagram on Tuesday, Modi said the latest growth figures demonstrated India’s ability to sustain economic momentum even as several parts of the global economy continue to face uncertainty. He stressed that maintaining the current pace of expansion would require a stronger focus on Swadeshi, self-reliance and domestic consumption.
Modi urges citizens to strengthen ‘Swadeshi’ and self-reliance
Congratulating citizens on the GDP performance, the Prime Minister said the achievement was driven by the determination and hard work of the people.
He argued that India’s economic progress has been particularly significant given the prolonged period of global uncertainty that followed the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. According to Modi, conflicts, wars, geopolitical tensions and supply-chain disruptions have continued to create challenges for economies worldwide, but India has managed to maintain its growth trajectory.
The Prime Minister also urged citizens to make choices that support the domestic economy. He appealed to people to prioritise Indian products and avoid spending abroad unless necessary.
He specifically advised citizens to reconsider foreign holidays, overseas weddings and non-essential gold purchases, suggesting that greater spending within the country could contribute to strengthening India’s economic ecosystem.
‘We have to maintain the speed of growth’
Emphasising the need to sustain the momentum, Modi said India cannot afford to slow down its development journey.
He underlined that becoming more self-reliant would be crucial to creating greater opportunities for the country’s young population. He said the aspirations of India’s youth can be transformed into reality only through sustained efforts, investment and collective determination.
The Prime Minister also criticised what he described as attempts by some sections to spread negativity and misinformation about the country. Despite such challenges, he said, India’s economy continued to expand.
PM links growth with vision of developed India
Modi said the government’s policies were aimed at creating an environment conducive to economic expansion and claimed that clear policy direction and intent had helped India reach new milestones.
He further connected the current growth performance with the country’s long-term development ambition, saying that continued emphasis on self-reliance and domestic capabilities could help ensure that India’s young generation inherits a developed India by the centenary of Independence.
The message comes at a time when India is attempting to strengthen domestic manufacturing, reduce external vulnerabilities and expand its role in global supply chains.
India records 7.8% GDP growth in Q1 FY27
Official economic data showed that India’s real GDP expanded 7.8 per cent year-on-year in the April-June quarter of 2026-27, exceeding market expectations and highlighting continued resilience in economic activity.
The pace, however, was lower than the 8.6 per cent growth recorded in the preceding quarter. Even with the sequential moderation, the latest figure remained strong against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions and concerns surrounding global energy markets.
The performance came amid uncertainty linked to the war in West Asia, which has affected energy markets and raised concerns about its potential impact on inflation, trade and economic growth.
India’s ability to maintain relatively high growth despite these external pressures is expected to keep attention focused on domestic demand, investment, manufacturing and the government’s efforts to promote self-reliance.
Focus now shifts to sustaining momentum
While celebrating the 7.8 per cent growth rate, the Prime Minister’s message also highlighted the challenge ahead: sustaining economic expansion over the coming quarters.
With global conditions remaining uncertain, India’s growth outlook will depend on the strength of domestic consumption, private investment, infrastructure spending, manufacturing activity and the country’s ability to withstand external shocks.
Modi’s call for Swadeshi and self-reliance therefore adds a domestic-consumption and economic-resilience dimension to the latest GDP numbers, placing the country’s current growth performance within the broader goal of building a stronger and more self-sufficient economy.
