New Delhi, August 14, 2023: The Supreme Court has taken strong exception to a viral social media post that falsely attributed a quote to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Chandrachud, terming it “fake and mischievous.” The post featured an image of the CJI alongside a fabricated statement urging citizens to protest against the ruling government.

The misleading quote in the post stated, “We are trying our best to save the Constitution of India, the democracy of India. But your cooperation is also very important for this, all the people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government for their rights, this dictatorial government will scare people, and threaten, but you don’t have to be afraid, keep courage and ask the government to account, I am with you.”

The Supreme Court’s Public Relations Office (PRO) swiftly addressed the matter, asserting that the post is “fake, ill-intended, and mischievous.” The PRO further clarified, “No such post has been issued by the Chief Justice of India nor has he authorised any such post.” The court also affirmed that appropriate actions are being taken in collaboration with law enforcement authorities.

The fabricated post accompanied by the caption “Indian democracy Supreme Court Zindabad” was widely circulated on social media platforms, drawing attention for its false representation of the CJI’s stance on protests against the government.

This incident underscores the pressing issue of misinformation and fake content circulating on social media platforms, prompting institutions like the Supreme Court to actively address and debunk such misleading information.

As society grapples with the challenges of a digitally interconnected world, combating misinformation becomes paramount to preserving the accuracy and integrity of public discourse.
