New Delhi, 20th April 2022: North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) bulldozers on Wednesday arrived in Delhiā€™s violence-hit Jahangirpuri and began removing illegal constructions in the area before the Supreme Court passed an order to halt the demolition.

Among other advocates, Advocate Dushyant Dave told the CJI NV Ramana that the demolition drive is unauthorized, illegal and unconstitutional. ā€œNo notice was served so that the reply is served in 10 days,” he added.

“There is a provision for appeal under the Municipal Corporation Act. We have filed a provisional application. It was supposed to start at 2PM but they started the demolition today morning at 9 knowing that we will mention,ā€ he added. In response to the appeal, CJI Ramana directed a status quo, stating that the case will be heard tomorrow.

North Delhi Municipal Corporationā€™s Mayor, Raja Iqbal Singh has said that they will follow the order of the apex court and will take action accordingly.

For the anti-encroachment drive, the NMCD had deployed 400 Delhi Police personnel in the Jahangirpuri area to maintain peace.
