Tata Steel Ludhiana Secures India’s First BIS Certification for Octagonal Billets

TEN NEWS NETWORK

National News (23 August 2026): Tata Steel Ludhiana has achieved a significant milestone in India’s steel manufacturing sector by becoming the country’s first steel producer to receive a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licence for manufacturing octagonal billets under IS 14650:2023.

The certification marks a major recognition of the company’s manufacturing capabilities, quality-control systems and technological expertise at its Ludhiana facility. The certified octagonal billets will be used in the production of Tata Tiscon TMT rebars, which serve a broad range of construction and industrial applications.

The development comes as steelmakers increasingly focus on improving material efficiency, product consistency and energy performance across the manufacturing and rolling process. Tata Steel said the octagonal billet technology is designed to provide several advantages over conventional square and rectangular billets.

According to the company, the geometry of an octagonal billet enables more efficient material movement during the rolling process. Its greater surface area facilitates improved heat transfer and more consistent cooling, helping achieve a more uniform internal structure in the steel.

The billet design is also expected to support improved grain flow during rolling. This can contribute to key mechanical and dimensional characteristics of the finished rebar, including strength, toughness, ductility, roundness and dimensional accuracy.

Technology aimed at improving steel conversion efficiency

A key advantage highlighted by Tata Steel is the potential for higher metal recovery. Compared with conventional billet shapes, the octagonal configuration can reduce losses at the corners during rolling, allowing a greater proportion of the input material to be converted into finished steel products.

The company also pointed to operational benefits for rolling mills. More consistent deformation and a more uniform distribution of rolling forces can help reduce mechanical stress and equipment wear, potentially supporting improved mill efficiency and maintenance performance over time.

The technology is therefore positioned not merely as a change in billet geometry but as an effort to improve the overall steel-conversion chain, from semi-finished material to finished reinforcement products.

Application across construction and infrastructure

The BIS-certified billets are intended for the manufacture of TMT reinforcement bars used in several major end-use segments. These include residential and commercial buildings, roads, bridges, metro networks and airports, besides industrial and power-sector projects.

With infrastructure development and urban construction continuing to drive demand for reinforcement steel, improvements in rebar consistency and material utilisation could have wider implications for steel-product performance and manufacturing efficiency.

Focus on differentiated and greener steelmaking

Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, NMB and Graphene, Tata Steel, said the BIS licence validates the technological capabilities developed at the Ludhiana plant and reflects the company’s efforts to pursue differentiated steel products.

He said the certification reinforces Tata Steel’s emphasis on technological advancement while supporting its broader objective of developing a more resource-efficient and environmentally responsible steelmaking ecosystem.

The company believes that better material utilisation, reduced processing losses, improved rolling efficiency and potentially lower equipment wear can collectively contribute to resource and energy optimisation.

The BIS recognition also gives the company a formal quality benchmark for its octagonal billet manufacturing process, strengthening its position in the development of specialised steelmaking and rolling technologies.

Tata Steel, however, cautioned that statements concerning its performance and future business prospects may constitute forward-looking statements under applicable securities laws. The company noted that actual outcomes could vary depending on factors such as economic conditions, market demand and supply, steel prices, regulatory changes, environmental developments, government policies, laws and judicial decisions, among other operational and external factors
