TCS’ Natarajan Chandrasekaran new Tata Sons chief: A complete profile

Mumbai, January 13: In a crucial move Tata Sons appointed a new Chairman for the group, a post that was lying vacant since Cyrus Mistry was ousted on October 24th. The post has now been given to Natarajan Chandrasekaran, who previously headed Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

N Chandrasekaran was born into a middle-class family in Tamil Nadu along with 5 siblings. His father, a lawyer by educations also practised farming. He completed his bachelor’s education from Coimbatore Institute of Technology in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. In the year 1986, he completed his masters in Computer application from Regional Engineering College in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. After completing his masters, Chandrasekaran, joined Tata Consultancy Services in 1987. Rising through the ranks, Chandrasekaran became the CEO of TCS on October 6, 2009. He had also earlier served as COO and Executive Director of TCS.

N Chandrasekaran: Achievements in TCS

  1. Chandrasekar led TCS to extraordinary heights during his leadership. The firm reported total revenues worth $16.5 billion USD in 2015-16. This is a massive increase from the 6.3 billion USD in 2010.
  2. The company has  over 353,000 consultants, thereby becoming the largest private sector employer in India. The company was rated Global Top Employer by the Top Employers Institute across 24 countries.
  3. Under N. Chandrasekar, TCS’ share in the Tata Sons 116 billion USD global empire has become a ginormous 60 percent and remains the most valuable company in India.
  4. Under his leadership, TCS was rated the world’s most powerful brand in IT Services in 2015.
  5. Following Narendra Modi’s digital India push, Chandrasekar has enabed the launch of a wide variety of digital products and services.
  6. N. Chandrasekaran has received numerous awards and accolades. He was voted as the ‘Best CEO’ for the fifth consecutive year by the Institutional Investor’s 2015 Annual All-Asia Executive Team rankings.  2014, he was voted as one of CNBC TV 18 – ‘Indian Business Icons’.  He has also received similar awards from Business Today and CNN-IBN among others.
  7. He serves a director on the board of the Reserve Bank of India. Further, he served as the Chairperson of the IT Industry Governors’ at the World Economic Forum in Davos last year.
  8. He has also received the Medal of the City of Amsterdam – Frans Banninck Coqc – in recognition of his endeavor to promote trade and economic relations between Amsterdam and India.
