Ten News Impact: NHRC takes cognizance, seeks report from authorities over mentally challenged duo

NOIDA (25/08/2022): National Human Rights Commission on Thursday took cognizance of the issue raised by Sector-23 residents and registered a case regarding the same.

Earlier this week, Ten News had prominently outlined the issue of a brother-sister duo living
“NHRC has registered a case no. 26068/24/30/2022 on the complaint regarding complaints of residents of sector -23,” a highly placed sourced informed Ten News.

Speaking to Ten News regarding the case, NHRC Member Dr Dnyaneshwar Mule said, ” We have sought an action taken report from the District Magistrate, Police Commissioner and Chief Medical Officer. We are expecting a swift reply and based on the same we will be evaluating as to what action has been taken by the competent district authorities on the issues.”

He also informed that a copy of the same has also been provided to the complainant and the commission was hopeful of necessary resolution of the issue.

The case pertains to a brother-sister duo, who have already been certified severely mentally ill, however no action is being taken to provide them with any assistance by the concerned authorities.

Neighbors have also expressed concerns over their safety and well-being, while pointing out the dangerous habit patterns of the two patients and how it is also impacting the mental wellbeing of children in the neighborhood.

Society residents are now hopeful that necessary help will be provided to the brother-sister duo and they will be sent to adequate mental facility for their further treatment.
