I.T.S Group of Dental Institutions organized the 8thNational

IAPHD Convention was held from 5th

Dental College, Hospital & Research Centre, Greater Noida.

This was an annual conference held under the aegis of Indian

Association of Public Health Dentistry.

The main motto of this Convention was tocreate awraness

on Oral Cancer in the society. The focus was on Oral Cancer

Prevention-Reflection, Introspection and Innovation , wherein

a plethora of knowledge was learnt and exchanged. This

convention was attended by more than 350 delegatesfrom

various Dental Colleges across India

The Chief Guest for the occasion was Mrs Rekha Gulbani,

Director Resources, Indian Cancer Society, who is an eminent

to 6th

July, 2014 at I.T.S

personality and has served the country both Nationally &

Internationally. The inaugural function was graced by Hon.

Chairman of I.T.S – The Education Group Dr. R.P Chadha, Dr.

Anmol S. Kalha – Director P.G. Studies. President, IAPHD

Dr Shankar Aradhaya first MDS in Public Health Dentistry

in India & Hon. Secretary IAPHD Dr Aswath Narayan,

Vice President IAPHD Dr Sabayasachi Saha were the other

dignitaries who graced the function. It was a great honor to

have with us the gracious presence of President Emeritus

Padmashree Dr RK Bali.

The committee for the convention was ably headed by

of Public Health Dentistry, I.T.S Dental College,Greater Nida),

Organizing Co-Chairman Dr. Aruna D.S(Prof. & HOD Dept.

of Public Health Dentistry, I.T.S Dental College,Muradnagar),

Dr. Shivlingesh k. k. Organizing Secretary (Reader, Dept. of

Public Health Dentistry I.T.S Dental College, Greater Noida).

Chief Guest Mrs Rekha Gulbani in her speech apprised the

social responsibility of I.T.S – The Education Group spreading

Oral Cancer awareness and early diagnosis, of this deadly

disease though dental health camps organized in rural as well as

in urban areas of Delhi NCR region, by dept. Of Public health

Dentistry.

Guest Lectures were delivered by globally acclaimed speakers,

Dr Monika Arora, Director of the Health Promotion division

at Public Health Foundation of India,Dr. Ravindra Mohan

Pandey, Professor & Head Department of Biostatistics,

A.I.I.M.S, Dr. Roopa Hariprasad, of Clinical Oncology

Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology, and Dr

Sunita Gupta is a Professor & Head of the Department of

Oral Medicine & Radiology at Maulana Azad Institute of

Dental Sciences (MAIDS), University of Delhi, New Delhi,

India.

The Speakers focused on Prevention of this life threatening

disease through avoidance of risk factors specially and early

detection of Oral Cancer. The Speakers give a image on

Tobacco-related cancers represented 42·0% (84 000) of male

and 18·3% (35 700) of female cancer deaths at ages 30-69 years

and there were twice as many deaths from oral cancers as lung

cancers, due to common use of chewing tobacco in men and

women in India, which differs substantially from that in high-
income countries. It was further added a smoker can inhale 15%

of tobacco in his body and give 85% to the environment. Further

adding to the facts according to a report of WHO, tobacco use

as one of the leading preventable causes mortality.

Tobacco smoking will cause the death of nearly six million

people globally each year. Unless we act quickly, it will cause

the lives of up to eight million people by 2030, of which more

than 80% smokers live in low-and middle-income countries, like

India which have maximum cases of Oral- Facial Cancer in the

past few decades.

The main emphasis of this conference was to spread awareness

among the masses and role of dentist and dental colleges in

curbing this menace. In the end a vote of thanks was given by

Dr. Shivlingesh to all the guest and delegates.
