New Delhi: (21/07/2019) Sheila Dikshit, the three-time chief minister of Delhi and senior Congress leader, passed away on Saturday afternoon after a prolonged illness at the age of 81. Former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit’s final rites were performed today, where several senior most Congress leaders and several Union ministers are were present on the occasion.
Sheila Dikshit was the longest-reigning chief minister of Delhi, serving for 15 years from 1998 to 2013. Her last rites took place at Nigambodh Ghat in the afternoon. The Delhi government had declared two-day mourning in the national capital as a mark of respect for her.
The Delhi government vehicle that was carrying her body had white flowers hanging from the chassis and a large smiling portrait of the veteran leader pinned above the front windshield.
At AICC Thousand of Emotional party workers and all the bigwigs of the Congress and other political parties, like Former PM Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Kapil Sibal attended the last rites at Congress Headquarters. Earlier in the day, BJP patriarch LK Advani and former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj visited Dikshit’s residence and paid homage.
UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on the demise of former Delhi CM Sheila Dixit said, “She was a great support for me. She became almost an elder sister & a friend. This is a big loss for Congress party. I will always remember her.”
Congress Leader Kapil Sibal recalls Sheila Dikshit as a Politician and a Friend in personal life said, its a loss of the nation because where do you find the leader of this quality,who contribute in the country development or a city, capital of the country and who also have bring people together.”
