Top Scholars present illuminating business cases at BIMTECH’s International Conference on Management Cases
BIMTECH, Birla Institute of Management Technology, Greater Noida (NCR), India, in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland and University of South Florida had a successful 3 days of it’s 11th International Conference on Management Cases 2021 (ICMC 2021) on December 3rd, 4th, and 5th December 2021. ICMC 2021 invited stimulating original, unpublished, research/teaching cases, case studies, based on primary and/or secondary data, field studies, empirical data, or significant experience of learning in various facets of management.
The event started with the Inaugural session on December 3, 2021, followed by a session on FORUM for Collective Wisdom (FCW) on December 4, 2021 which was divided into three slots, each with a unique theme as follows- Group 1: Covid and Teaching and Learning-L, Group 2: Organization and Employees, Group 3: Value Creation. The ICMC event concluded with a Valedictory Session on December 5, 2021.
Day 1 started with welcoming the dignitaries by Rupali Singh as she highlighted that BIMTECH has been hosting this conference for the past 11 years, to achieve international relevance and encourage authors from all over the world to participate and share their experiences on a platform designed specifically for academics, practitioners, consultants, research scholars, and students of management studies. She also explained that it encourages them to submit research/teaching cases in many aspects of management and provides a forum for networking and discussion. Then as the tradition goes Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director of BIMTECH acknowledged the panellists, highlighted the importance of the case study method in the present world, and expressed his hearty welcome to everyone present.
This was followed by a conference preview by Prof. A.K. Dey, Chairperson CMCD, BIMTECH who shared the vision of the Centre for Management Case Development and the conference. Then the chief guest Prof. Rauno Sairinen, Professor of Environment Policy, University of Finland addressed the audience. He talked about “Paradoxes in sustainable and green business: How ‘dirty’ mining industry is developing itself as climate saver and responsible actor?” He spoke on a very relevant topic and the deliberation would give many directions for case research to solve local problems.
Then most insightful segment was a Q/A round where the participants got an opportunity to get deeper insights from Prof. Rauno Sairinen.
Soon after the address two conference books titled ‘Case Studies on Perspectives on Entrepreneurship and Sustainability and ‘Case Studies on Perspectives on Management and Digital Business’, were released by Dr Shreya Mishra, Assistant Professor, BIMTECH.
Following the book release, the Awards were announced in three different categories which include Sage Best Case Awards to three to high-Quality Research Cases, Three Case Centre Awards UK, to high-quality Teaching Cases and Young Scholar Awards to four scholars under the age of 40. Further, Awards of Case Competition held for first years Management students as well as Summer Internship Competition for Second Year Management Students were also announced. In total 16 awards were conferred during the program.
The event concluded with a customary Vote of Thanks by Dr A. Sahay, Dean (Research) and Professor Strategic Management who began by thanking keynote speaker Prof. Rauno Sairinen who brought the subject of paradoxes in sustainable green business to the table and also about the environmental damage and then told about ISO twenty- six thousand and global reporting initiative. Lastly, he thanked Prof Sunil Mmithas, from University of South Florida, USA, Prof. Hanna Lehtimaki and Prof. Ville-Viekko Piispanen from University of Eastern Finland, who have and has been instrumental in bringing the conference to a world-class level contributing to ICMC. He finally thanked Dr Harivansh Chaturvedi, Director, BIMTECH for his support and Prof. A.K. Dey, Chairperson CMCD, BIMTECH, for his constant efforts. The event ended on a positive and delighted note.
Day 2 started in three slots with sessions on FORUM for Collective Wisdom (FCW) on December 4, 2021.
Group 1 with a theme of Covid and T-L, was started by Rupali Singh. Sritama Pal and Nurlykhan Aljanova presented her enlightening case on the theme of Ensuring Continuous Learning Experience through Creative Response during Covid-19 Crisis. It was followed by the next two illuminating case presentations on the theme of Organizational Compassion Competence in Times of Crisis: A Case of BIMTECH’s Response to COVID-19 by AV Shukla and Sangeeta Shukla and Assurance of Learning in the Affective Domain – Case from a Business School in India by Deepa. R and Mansurali. A. Dr. R. Deepa, PSGIM thanked and congratulated BIMTECH for taking this initiative. Dr. A.V. Shukla expressed deep sense of gratitude to Dr. R. Deepa for her valuable insights and thanked her on behalf of BIMTECH. Rupali Singh thanked the presenters for bringing their research on this platform and also thanked the audience for joining the session.
Group 2 with a theme of Organization and Employees, started with enlightening presentation of the first case on the theme of The STAR Model as an organizational diagnosis method for long-term strategy development: A case study of a medium-sized engineering company in Thailand by Bruce Hanson & Vasu Keerativutisest. The model is based on 5 dimensions: Strategy, Structure, Process, Rewards and People. It was followed by the next three illuminating case presentations on the theme of Organisational Commitment of Young Employees in a Service Organisation by Annariina Tuhkanen and Esa Hiltunen, Circular Economy Innovation in Waste Management: Employees as Sustainability Agents by Ville-Veikko Piispanen, Sara Peltola, Hanna Lehtimäki, Kaisa Henttonen and Jatta Pitkänen, Employee-driven innovation in strategy planning: A case study of engineering industry by Esa Hiltunen and Olli Markkanen. Panelists appreciated the wonderful discussion around the organisation and employees, importance of middle and top management in an organization.
Group 3 with a theme of Value Creation started with enlightening presentation of the first case on the theme of Assessment of Socio-Economic Impact of AI-driven Assistive Mobile Apps by Raparla Venkata Krishnaveni, Nisha Pandhey and Satish Modh. It was followed by the next three illuminating case presentations on the theme of Product brand communication of healthy snacks by Juuso Nieminen and Outi-Maaria Palo-oja, Gender Identity and Entrepreneurship: Breaking the Gender Stereotype by Reeti Kulshrestha, Arunaditya Sahay and Subhanjan Sengupta, and Multidimensional Value Creation in Stakeholder Collaboration: A Case of Green Roofs in Finland by Anna Heikkinen, Tapaninaho Riikka, Kujala Johanna, Emma Saramäki.
Prof. Saloni sinha started the third day of ICMC 2021 and exchanged greetings with panelists. Deepika Upadhyay from Christ University, Banglore explained her case study- Healing Ganga through fragrance of PHOOL- a case of social entrepreneurship followed by Pallavi Tyagi from Galgotia who gave her insights. Points discussed by Deepika Upadhyay and Pallavi Tyagi were about protagonist of the case: Mr. Ankit Aggrawal (founder and CEO of PHOOL), and Present case- Dillema: Vulnerable state of sacred river and marginalized section of women. The problems she highlighted were about 800 million flowers being dumped into water bodies and polluting the same, which can be solved by recycling floral waste.
Followed by that Dr Ritika Gugani talked about empowerment generation, gasping for breath, case about Pollinate group, which operates in India and Nepal. Anuj Sharma, Hari Mohan Jha Bidyarthi, Sangita Dutta Gupta, and N.S. Viswanath gave their valuable inputs on the case and concluded the informative session.
In the next session, Rupali Singh inaugurated the session with greetings to the guests, Dr. Parameswar Nayak, Sivakumar Alur and informed about the Rules & Regulations of the presentation. Presentation started by Dr. Parameswar nayak who talked about the situation of education during covid-19 pandemic. They conducted surveys from the students to determine the online education during the pandemic was effective or not and highlighted the challenges faced by students. Dr. Samudra sen presented a case study on BNV School: In pursuit of excellence through innovation, talked about issues like cost minimization, infrastructure requirements. Learning objectives were applications of management principles and theory to social enterprises.
Followed by that, Dr. Archana Chaudhary presented a case study on Team members promotion injustice of Peter principle, in which she talked about the hypothetical company and the issues which happened in the organization.
Prof. Rupali Singh started the last session of ICMC 2021. First Speaker of the session was Jason Cherubini who talked about how film industry was heavily impacted in 2020. Early 2021 was about what to do. During the period, the growth was more on a qualitative level. Further, he discussed about How a Film is Made, the monetization part, and background of the company, Dawn’s Light, financing for films as a specific project through equity,debt ,soft money, and what were the options available for the company in 2021: small movies, the ones made for TV or speculative projects like big budget action movies.
The next speaker of the session was a team from NICMR, Pune, who talked about the BRTS-Bus Rapid Transit System and concluded by discussing the limitations and feasibility of the model. Further, Ms. Meena Bhatia pitched in a food for thought as in to identify the reasons why the plan failed in Delhi. Followed by that, Dr. A Sivakumar, VITBS, discussed about a case on Rupay Cards. Rupay cards are a product of national Payment corporation of india introduced in 2012. Then, Mathew Grace gave an overview of crowdfunding. Dr.Shibaprasad Parhi, Dr. Manas Kumar Pal, and Dr. Anamika talked about the dilemma of a nursing home to ensure financial sustainability.
Dr Ruchika Jaiswal and Mona Chaudhary Assistant Professor at Amity University shared their case about Underutilized Product Innovation – A Case Study of Clean India Ventures. The next speakers were Vikas Gupta and Arunandita Sahay, who talked about the Role of environment social governance in the performance of Shree Cement, Abhijat Abhyanka, discussed about GRIHA Norms : Are They Really Green Enough?, Vedantan Leela discussed about whether JOHNSON & JOHNSON talcum powder is safe?, Seema Sharma talked about Testing the efficacy of bankruptcy Prediction models through case study of Jet Airways. Followed by all the illuminating cases, Shankar Menon talked about Survival Decisions in A pandemic: ABC case. ABC believes that if you use right methods and right people you’ll be ultimately rise and successful. Then, Dr. Gary Stockport & Dr. Benita Hube talked about A University in Transition-A Pandemic Hits. Kristina Raybova, Yelena Krupina, Madina Kazeken & Gaukhar Malik talked about Profound English Language School: When it is Time for Change. Praveena Arora, Dr. Navneet joshi, Mr. Sanjive Saxena talked about Sealing of a Housing society during the lockdown: the Emergence of RWA as a savior body, and Dr. Samudra Sen & Dr. Aashish Argade talked about Aura Herbal Textiles Limited.
Lastly, Prof. Ajoy Kumar Dey gave the valedictory speech and concluded the session by expressing that all the sessions were very impactful.
