New Delhi, 07th July 2023: In the midst of an uproar, the assembly speaker suspended five MLAs from opposition parties in Tripura for the day. Their suspension, however, was lifted later in the day.

Minutes after the Budget Session began, opposition lawmakers from the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), the CPI-M, and the Congress chanted slogans demanding punishment against BJP MLA Jadab Lal Debnath, who was caught on camera earlier this year watching an obscene film in the legislature.

Animesh Debbarma, the leader of the opposition, submitted an adjournment motion to examine the BJP MLA issue, which was rejected by the Speaker, sparking protests.

Members began chanting protests as state Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy began presenting the annual budget for 2023-24.

The assembly witnessed riotous scenes as MLAs formed a chain and leapt into the well, with some even walking on the tables.

During the controversy, Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen suspended five MLAs: Sudip Roy Barman (Congress), Nayan Sarkar (CPI-M), and Brishaketu Debbarma, Nandita Reang, and Ranjit Debbarma (TMP).

Later, the opposition members protested the Speaker’s decision and also demanded disciplinary action against Debnath.
