New Delhi (India), April 14, 2023: Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi is vacating his government-allotted bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi as he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha due to his conviction in a criminal defamation case last month.

The 12 Tughlak Lane bungalow was allotted to Gandhi in 2005, after he won his first Lok Sabha election from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. Trucks were seen being loaded outside of his house as he was given a deadline of April 22 to move out.

Gandhi’s disqualification came after a local court in Surat convicted him for a two-year term over a speech he made ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election. He had asked about “how all thieves have Modi surnames” during the speech.

As per the rules, a disqualified parliamentarian is not entitled to government accommodation and is given a 30-day period to vacate the official bungalow.

After receiving the eviction notice, the Congress party started a campaign called “Mera Ghar, Aapka Ghar,” which symbolically dedicated their home to the former party chief.

Delhi Women Congress Sevadal President, Rajkumari Gupta, had even transferred her house to the Mangolpuri area, which she reportedly “received” at the time of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Other Congress supporters also posted on social media, welcoming the former Congress chief to their homes.
