Police on Thursday arrested a man and his accomplice for making an extortion call to a local jaggery businessman to provide a scooty to his girlfriend in Dadri. The accused have been identified as Manish Kumar(22) and Amir (20), residents of Mewatiyan Kasba in Dadri.

A demand of 10 lakh ruppes is been made from Aashish Goyal, the jaggery businessman. Goyal is a trader in Old Mandi of Dadri and he received the extortion call on January 11 night.

“There were two calls made from two different phone numbers to Goyal on the night of January 11. The caller had threatened to kill Goyal if he did not pay them ₹ 10 lakh. We had registered a FIR in the matter and the two numbers were put on surveillance,” said Ram Sen Singh, station house officer, Dadri police station.

Based on the surveillance results, police nabbed the duo on Thursday around 8.30am near the railway crossing in Dadri. “We had started following them since Wednesday night using the surveillance system. Finally, when a clear location was made available, we nabbed them,” Singh said.

According to police, Manish had hatched the extortion plan with his friend Aamir to satisfy the demands of his girlfriend. “Both Manish and Aamir are miscreants who have no education. He had earlier provided his girlfriend some mobile phones and also took her to shopping malls. “I was not able to bear the expanses and hence decided to make easy money,” Manish told cops.
