Greater Noida :  On February 14th, Uttar Pradesh cabinet gave approval to a decision after which the Deputy Commissioner of Police will be eligible to action under the Goonda Act in Lucknow and Gautam Budh Nagar, districts with police commissionerate system in Uttar Pradesh. In this regard, the Cabinet approved the draft of the Uttar Pradesh Gunda Control Amendment Bill 2021.

Till now, under the police commissionerate system, only the commissioner had this right. But from now onwards after the approval of the UP cabinet, this right can also be used by the Deputy Commissioner of Police. The bill provides for a strict prohibition on human trafficking, money laundering, cow slaughter, bonded labour and animal trafficking.

Apart from this, the new bill also has a provision for imposing Goonda Act on crimes like fake currency, trade-in counterfeit drugs, manufacture and trade of illegal weapons and illegal mining. Criminals charged with such crimes will not be able to get bail easily and administration will have the power to seize their assets and property. Under this law, police can also detain the accused for a maximum of 60 days instead of 14 days.
