US to return 100 antiquities stolen from India, says PM Modi

New Delhi, 24th June 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to a happy Indian diaspora at the Ronald Reagan Centre, expressing gratitude to the American government for returning more than 100 stolen treasures to India.

On the final day of his first state visit to the United States, Prime Minister Modi met with members of the Indian diaspora at the Ronald Reagan Centre.

“These antiquities of Indian origin had reached the international market through right or wrong paths,” the Prime Minister stated, “but America’s decision to return them to India shows the emotional bond between the two nations.”

The Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is bringing back antiquities and treasures worldwide to revitalise India’s cultural and spiritual history.

During multiple foreign tours, the Prime Minister tackled the issue with world leaders and multilateral agencies, and 251 antiques have been returned to India, 238 of which have been returned since 2014.

In 2022, US officials also repatriated to India 307 antiques taken by numerous minor trafficking networks, valued at approximately USD 4 million.
