National News (31 August 2026): Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the historic Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali on the Pamba River on Sunday, describing the iconic boat race as a powerful expression of Kerala’s cultural heritage, spiritual traditions and collective spirit.
Extending greetings to the people of Kerala on the occasion of Onam, the Vice President also congratulated the state following its recent renaming. He recalled his role as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha in presiding over the passage of the State Renaming Bill during the recently concluded parliamentary session.
Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan said the Aranmula Vallamkali represents centuries-old traditions closely associated with Onam and the sacred Vallasadya feast. He highlighted the remarkable coordination, discipline and sporting spirit displayed by the rowers as elaborately decorated Palliyodams move across the Pamba River in perfect synchronisation.
Pamba River Symbolises Faith and Spirituality
Speaking about the religious significance of the Pamba, the Vice President said the river holds a special place in Kerala’s spiritual landscape and is closely connected with the Sabarimala pilgrimage. He described the river as a symbol of faith, purification and spiritual surrender.
Radhakrishnan also recalled his personal association with Sabarimala, mentioning that he had undertaken the pilgrimage seven times. He said his first visit to the shrine, shortly before he was nominated as a Member of Parliament, remained particularly meaningful to him. He expressed his belief that the blessings of Lord Ayyappa played an important role in his subsequent electoral success.
Aranmula’s Heritage Goes Beyond the Boat Race
The Vice President underlined that Aranmula’s cultural significance extends beyond Vallamkali. He referred to the ancient Sree Parthasarathy Temple and the globally recognised, GI-tagged Aranmula Kannadi, a traditional handmade metal mirror known for its distinctive craftsmanship.
Recalling an event held at the Vice-President’s Residence last year, he said he had presented Aranmula Kannadi to guests, who appreciated its unique artistry and workmanship.
Radhakrishnan stressed that traditional crafts, indigenous knowledge and cultural practices must be protected and promoted so that they can be passed on to future generations.

Aranmula Keeps People Connected to Their Roots
The Vice President observed that the enduring popularity of Aranmula’s traditions demonstrates the emotional connection people maintain with their cultural roots. He noted that even many people living and working abroad return to their homeland to participate in cherished festivals and traditional celebrations.
He said such traditions provide a strong link between generations and help preserve the cultural identity of communities amid rapid social and economic change.
‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi’ Reflects India’s Cultural Vision
Emphasising the need to balance development with heritage conservation, Radhakrishnan said tradition and modernity should progress together. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”, he said India’s cultural heritage can coexist with the country’s modern development aspirations.
Highlighting India’s diverse festivals and traditions, he said cultural diversity strengthens the nation rather than dividing it.
“Our diversity is not a source of division; it is a source of our strength.”
The programme was attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Home Affairs Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Higher Education Minister Roji M. John, Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph, MP Anto Antony, Aranmula MLA Abhin Varkey, and several other dignitaries. The inauguration of Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali once again brought together Kerala’s religious traditions, folk culture, craftsmanship and community participation, reaffirming the festival’s enduring place in the state’s cultural landscape.
