Islamabad, 11th May 2023: Media reports confirm violent clashes have broken out across Pakistan following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Security forces arrested the leader on Tuesday at the High Court in the capital, Islamabad.
Hundreds of people took to the streets against the authority of the present government. Videos circulating across social media show the office of Pakistan’s national radio broadcaster, Radio Pakistan, being set on fire by protesters. The government responded by suspending internet services and getting more police officers on the grounds.
Social media videos show many protests outside the army compounds and people breaking into the authorities’ houses and thrashing the place.
The call for his release is also being supported outside the country, as supporters of Imran Khan rallied outside the Pakistan High Commission in London to protest against his arrest.
Khan was arrested on corruption charges, and he assures his supporters are fabricated and ‘politically motivated.’ His arrest also came hours after the military rebuked him for alleging that a senior officer was plotting to kill him.
