Dr. Mulay talked about his experience as a member of the NHRC. He claimed that the organization is very close to his heart. “It gives me a role in ensuring the well-being of people who suffer the consequences of inequalities in our society.”
“What does constitution offer to our people?” Dr. Mulay asked rhetorically. “It promises equality, dignity, right to life, and right liberty,” he answered. “We all have a role in that, in ensuring that everybody gets these rights.”

Dr. Mulay talked about the people in different walks of lives, children, prisoners, sex workers, etc suffering from discrimination and cruelties. He shared his experience of visiting the Chhapra District Jail in Bihar, “It’s quite harsh even on prisoners. And because they are human beings, we have to look after their needs,” he stated.

“Similarly, irrespective of all the schemes, there is still a class in India that lags behind. So, they approach us, and we try to find out the reasons and we try to give them some relief, and we try to establish the accountability of the authorities.” He described that the NHRC tries to monitor the schemes introduced by the government for the lower class, and try to connect the dots and fill the gaps. “We examine each case that comes to us,” Dr. Mulay explained. “We also set norms and SOPs.”

“So, there is a vast menu and canvas in front of us in NHRC and we try to do it as sincerely as possible,” he said wholeheartedly.
