Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinches India’s first gold at Commonwealth games 2022

Mirabai Chanu won gold in the women’s 49 kg event on Saturday, giving India its third medal at the 2022 Birmingham Games. Mirabai hoisted 201kg in total. Mirabai successfully lifted 88kg on her second try, matching her Snatch Personal Best, national record, and Games record. In her third effort, she attempted 90kg but failed. She subsequently won the gold medal after lifting 109kg in her first Clean and Jerk effort. Mirabai improved on her first try by lifting 113kg on the second. Mirabai tried 115kg on the third try but was unable to finish the lift.

Mirabai earned silver in the women’s 49 kg event last year, giving India its first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was India’s first Olympic weightlifting silver medal.

Mirabai’s big break came in 2014, when she won silver in the 48kg division at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Her overall lift of 170 kg fell just three kilogrammes shy of the gold-medal effort.
