Uttar Pradesh police department is dealing with heavy shortage of police personnel in its work-force. There are total numbers of three lakh sixty thousand police posts in the state out of which only two lakh fifteen thousand are occupied as of date. The numbers reflect a shortage of almost 40% in the law and order machinery of state. The shortage is mainly at ground level posts and the reason is also used by some concerned officers as an excuse in case of law and order lapses.

However the department now plans to get rid of this problem. ADG (law and order) Anand Kumar has now said that these vacancies will now be filled in different phases. An annual target of recruiting 30,000 additional personnel’s has been fixed for the purpose.

ADG (l&O) Anand Kumar on Friday visited Meerut to take stock of police preparedness in lieu of annual Kaanwariya pilgrimage. He said, “It is certainly an issue that we have to deal with shortage of force on ground. However as is evident the police is adequately coping up with the challenge and law and order in the state is getting better with time. It is our firm resolve to strictly deal with miscreants and results are showing in the ground”.

He also informed that in next five years 1.5 Lakh posts in the department will be filled. A road map for these recruitment has been prepared by the department and the process is expected to begin shortly.

Taking cognizance of many encounters in the state he said, “Police is now fighting criminals with utmost bravery. State machinery is completely confident to minimize and eradicate large scale crime. The instances of chain snatching as well as eve-teasing have also reduced exponentially. The message to miscreants is very clear and anyone taking law in their hands will not be exempted from punishment”.
