Terminated for being pregnant, Noida woman gets help from Union Minister through Social Media

A lady named Yukta Sharma Mathur has sought help from Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi after being unlawfully terminated from her job. The women allege that she was terminated for sole reason of being pregnant. She says that decision has been taken as part of companies cost cutting measure. As per her statement the company didn’t extend any maternity benefits to her despite she being a permanent employee and instead terminated her from the job.

Yukta Sharma lives in Noida and was employed at Houseful International Limited.

Seeks Help From Ministry

After the unjust treatment meted out to her by her employers, Yukta took to twitter to urge Women and Child Development Minister for help.

She tweeted, “Terminatd frm job in pregnancy by Housefull Intl. co. No maternity benefits paid. Pls help @Manekagandhibjp @PMOIndia @NCWIndia @MinistryWCD

In reply to which Union Minister Maneka Gandhi said, “Dear Yukta, please DM your employer’s and your contact details. Do take good care of your health. #HelpMeWCD

After the ministers intervention National Commission of Women also reached out to Yukta for more details. In its statement NCW said that her case has been taken up by the commission and more details will be sought to get in depth of the matter. 

The ministry has asked for the details of the company and would take any action after going through the details of the termination.

In India, The Maternity benefit (Amendment) Act 2017 provides 26 weeks paid leave for pregnant woman and the act was enacted from 1st April 2017.
