With festival of Rakhsabandhan around the corner, the preparations are underway in different households to make it memorable. However on these time of increasing environmental concerns, a 12 year old student of Delhi Public School Vasant Kunj has come up with an innovative idea to make this Rakshabnadhan more memorable.

Raghav Mathur, a Class 8th student at DPS, has churned out a Do It Yourself (DIY) trick to make an environment friendly Rakhi.

He said, “The rakhi that I propose is plantable and both brother and sister can jointly plant it in a pot or soil and see a plant grows after 5 days. What fun to see a rakhi growing into a plant otherwise all these years rakhis used to be thrown in dustbins”.

Detailing of the things required, he mentions, “We just need a coloured ribbon, some spices lentils eg.coriander seeds, cloves, green moong dal, water melon seeds etc., fevicol, .round face wipes/ round cotton pads and few beads/stars, sparkles etc. to make it beautiful”.

His DIY methodology is simple and easily adoptable. Explaining the same he lists the following Six steps :

METHOD

  1. Cut the ribbon according to the wrist size of your brother
  2. Place the cotton pad or foam cut in round shape or thin cardboard in the centre of the ribbon
  3. Now very neatly place an elaichi in the centre or if you have a small Ganesha or om then place it in the centre with fevicol. Put fevicol all over the foam
  4. Start placing seeds around the Ganesha very neatly.make layers with different seeds till the foam is fully covered.
  5. In the end leave place for bright beads.this will brighten up your rakhi. You can also decorate with stars/sequins/ bindis or sparkles

Thus could be made a final product that would not only stregthen the affectionate bond between a borther-sister but also pave way for a memorabilia in form of a plant that would grow with time and love.

Speaking about his motivation behind the idea, Raghav says, “I am sure it must have taken not more than an hour. But how much satisfaction it will give by making something with your hands full of love  affection and good wishes .icing on the cake is that we have done our bit towards doing something for the betterment of the environment and making plantable eco friendly RAKHI!”
So enjoy this Rakshabandhan and make it more memorable with this easy to do, home made hack!
