#SupremeCourt Orders Nationwide Stay on Centre’s Cattle Slaughter Rules

New Delhi, July 11: The Supreme Court ordered a nationwide stay on the Centre’s cattle slaughter ban rules which were rolled out in May 2017. Saying that livelihood cannot be subjected to uncertainties, the Supreme Court today said that the government will tweak the rules and will re-notify the public regarding the cattle slaughter ban. The apex court said that it is considering all objections on cattle ban. Staying the cattle slaughter ban rules, SC said that it would bring changes in the rules by August end. The court also said that identification and notification of livestock markets by states would take three months; till then there’d be no implementation. The court also said that Madurai court’s order would continue till further hearing.

Restricting the set up of animal markets within 50 kilometres, 25 kilometres of an international border, state border respectively, the Ministry of Environment and Forests had rolled out new regulations under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act banning the sale of cattle to slaughterhouses across India. In the new rules on cattle slaughter ban, the Centre had allowed the trade of cows only among farmland owners across India and not to the slaughterhouses. The rules were supposed to be implemented in next three months.
