New Delhi (India), May 8, 2023: Delhi High Court has reprimanded Tihar jail authorities for their inability to prevent the shocking murder of gangster Tillu Tajpuriya. The incident took place on May 2 and was captured on CCTV.
The court has ordered the jail superintendent to appear before the court personally for the next hearing. Justice Jasmeet Singh expressed his dismay at the failure of authorities to take adequate steps to prevent the murder.
The court was hearing a plea filed by Tajpuriya’s father and brother seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. Additional Standing Counsel Rahul Tyagi informed the court that the murder was a result of a gang war and that the investigation had been transferred to the special cell.
The court has ordered the government counsel to indicate the responsibility and accountability of the officers responsible for the lapses.
The incident has brought to light the security lapses within the prison system. Tajpuriya, who was accused of killing another gangster inside a Delhi Court in 2021, was stabbed to death inside Tihar jail. Six men were caught on CCTV footage repeatedly stabbing him. The footage also showed that as a dying Tajpuriya was being carried away, his attackers beat him again in the presence of police officials.
The police have stated that Tajpuriya was killed by associates of gangster Jitender Gogi, whom Tajpuriya had shot dead in 2021. The court has also asked the Delhi Police to consider granting security to Tajpuriya’s father and brother.
