New Delhi, 15th June 2023: Former Indian students facing legal proceedings that could lead to their deportation from Canada because the study permits they used to enter the country were based on forged documents will be granted temporary residence permits until a task force considers each case on its merits, according to Canadian authorities.

Sean Fraser, Canada’s immigration, refugees, and citizenship minister, stated on Wednesday. “…international students who are not found to be involved in fraud will not face deportation.”

This is also done to ensure that well-meaning students and graduates are not subjected to a five-year immigration ban. Fraser stated that he took this measure since many of those affected came to Canada legitimately to pursue their degrees.

However, he cautioned that those who did not comply would not be forgiven. He claimed that certain people who had no desire to get further education participated in organised crime.

The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) will send cases of ex-students who arrived on fraudulent documentation to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada for inquiry.
Sumit Sen, a Toronto-based lawyer representing numerous ex-students, praised the move.

Sen noted that ongoing court actions would be continued, and the new regulation would be relevant if the individual faces deportation.
