New Delhi, August 19, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the G20 Digital Economy Ministers’ meeting via video message, underscored India’s remarkable digital transformation, emphasizing that the nation’s 850 million internet users experience some of the world’s most affordable data costs. He credited the initiation of the Digital India campaign in 2015 as a catalyst for India’s digital leap over the past nine years.

The prime minister elaborated on how technology has been harnessed to revolutionize governance, citing the Aadhaar initiative as a prime example. He further mentioned the Jan Dhan bank accounts, Aadhaar, and Mobile (JAM) trinity, highlighting its role in Direct Benefits Transfer, which has effectively curbed system leakages.

“Fully digitized taxation systems are promoting transparency and e-governance,” PM Modi asserted.

He expressed contentment over the G20’s efforts in establishing a virtual Global Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, accentuating the importance of a Common Framework for Digital Public Infrastructure to create a just, accountable, and transparent digital ecosystem.

In recognizing the security threats facing the digital economy, PM Modi stressed the necessity of G20 High-Level Principles for a Secure, Trusted, and Resilient Digital Economy.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi celebrated a significant milestone, as the number of Jan Dhan accounts surpassed 50 crore. Notably, around 67% of these accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban regions, reflecting an inclusive financial movement.

Hailing the accomplishment, Modi commended the participation of “our Nari Shakti” (women power) and the endeavor’s rural expansion. He remarked, “With 67% of accounts opened in rural and semi-urban areas, we are also ensuring that the benefits of financial inclusion reach every corner of our nation.”
