Greater Noida News (07/04/2026): In a major step toward making advanced healthcare more accessible, Sharda Hospital in Greater Noida has successfully conducted the region’s first kidney transplant under the Government of India’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. The landmark procedure highlights how public healthcare initiatives can make life-saving treatments available to patients who might otherwise be unable to afford them.
The beneficiary of the transplant is a 32-year-old man who had been suffering from advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). His health condition had gradually deteriorated after developing complications related to hypertension. Over time, the damage to his kidneys worsened, leaving him dependent on regular hemodialysis—a medical process used to remove toxins and excess fluids when the kidneys are no longer able to perform their normal function.
Despite undergoing dialysis through a surgically created fistula, the patient continued to struggle with severe symptoms such as persistent headaches and uncontrolled high blood pressure. Medical investigations later confirmed that he had reached an advanced stage of kidney failure. With the cost of long-term dialysis and transplantation beyond his financial capacity, the patient turned to the Ayushman Bharat scheme for assistance.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Sharda Hospital initiated a comprehensive evaluation process to determine the feasibility of a kidney transplant. After detailed compatibility tests, including HLA testing, the patient’s father was identified as a suitable donor. A specialized multidisciplinary team at the hospital successfully carried out the transplant procedure, ensuring both surgical precision and post-operative care.
Significantly, the entire treatment—including the transplant surgery, hospitalization, and post-operative management—was fully covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This ensured that the patient and his family did not have to bear the financial burden typically associated with such complex procedures.
Following the transplant, the patient has shown remarkable improvement. Doctors report that his kidney function has stabilized, and his overall physical and mental health has returned to normal. With his health restored, he has also regained social and economic stability, recently securing employment and looking forward to building a healthy and productive future.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Bheem Raj Gupta, Director and Unit Head of Nephrology at Sharda Hospital, emphasized the importance of kidney transplantation for patients with end-stage renal disease. He said, Dialysis serves as a crucial life-support system for patients with kidney failure, but a successful kidney transplant remains the gold standard treatment for end-stage renal disease. It offers significantly better quality of life and long-term survival. In many cases, frequent dialysis limits daily activities and impacts overall well-being. By performing this transplant under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, we have not only restored kidney function but also given a young patient the opportunity to live a dialysis-free, productive life.
Dr. Shilpi Tiwari, Senior Consultant in Urology at Sharda Hospital, highlighted the growing concern of kidney disease among younger individuals. This case represents more than a clinical achievement—it reflects the impact of accessible healthcare. Chronic kidney disease is increasingly affecting younger populations. Studies suggest that nearly 17 percent of people may suffer from some form of CKD, with a noticeable rise among individuals under the age of 40. Factors such as uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy dietary habits are major contributors. One of the biggest challenges remains late diagnosis, often when dialysis or transplantation becomes the only option. Programs like Ayushman Bharat enable timely treatment for patients who would otherwise struggle to afford such care, she noted.
Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Kousar Shah, Group CEO of Sharda Hospital and ShardaCare-Healthcity, said the achievement reflects the hospital’s commitment to inclusive healthcare.
At Sharda Hospital, we strongly believe that high-quality medical care should be accessible to every individual, irrespective of financial limitations. Successfully conducting a kidney transplant under the Ayushman Bharat scheme demonstrates how public healthcare initiatives, when implemented effectively, can bridge critical gaps in access to advanced treatment. We remain committed to supporting the Government of India’s vision of equitable and inclusive healthcare for all, he said.
The case also underlines the life-saving impact of timely kidney transplantation for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. Experts note that when medical expertise is combined with supportive healthcare policies, it can significantly transform patient outcomes and restore hope for families facing critical illnesses.
