The launch of a new taxation zone in Meerut was formally announced by the office of the chief commissioner for customs, central excise and service tax, on Friday. The new office would be catering to the taxation needs of businesses spanning across western UP. Fourteen districts of western UP and Uttarachchal would be included in it, making it one of the biggest taxation circles in North India.

In a press conference in the city yesterday, the chief commissioner, Mahinder Singh talked about the success of reforms in the registration processes. The reforms, taken up in the last financial year, had simplified the registration processes for the benefit of the enterprises. “The process of service tax registration no longer requires submission of hard copies of documents before issuance of registration certificates and the number of days in which registration is to be issued has been brought down from seven days to two days,” Singh said.
