A Round Table Conference on Weaving Despair: Challenges of Handloom Sector In India!

New Delhi: The Handloom sector employs over 6.5 million families. lt is the second largest cluster of labourers after the agriculture sector. The handloom sector is representative of the diversity of culture within the country. Indian handloom products are popular across the globe for their intricacy and artistic quality. The weavers usually belong to specific communities that sustain their art and skill by preserving their traditional knowledge orally. Their handiwork is more than the product they create, it is also an income generation activity that helps them feed their families.

 

On Wednesday in Nation’s Capital, The Round Table Conference with members of Parliament like, CPI Rajya Sabha member D Raja, JD(U) MP Ali Anwar and BJP MP Virender Kashyap spoke about Weaving Despair: Challenges of the Handloom sector in India at Constitution club in New Delhi.

The Discussion highlighted recent economic and policy-level developments and changes by the Government which have been inconsiderate of the weavers’ needs and basic requirements for survival. The Ministry of Textiles and its offices, that are responsible for the welfare of the weavers, have failed to perform their duties. Through the rapid changes and budget cuts being made especially for the Handloom sector, the condition of the weavers is worsening socially and more importantly, economically.

CPI Rajya Sabha member D Raja spoke to Ten News Exclusively about this Handloom Issue He said,

“It is the duty of the government and the policy makers to look into the realities ot the handloom sector and study the effect of the policies they implement. The continued
deprivation of the weavers is a matter of utmost importance and should be tended to with a sense of urgency.”

JD(U) MP Ali Anwar Said, The Handlooms are an important sector In our country; it employs over 635% families Handloom products of our country are well known across the world. India, being a diverse country of multiple cultures, the handloom products are incredibly diverse as well. Each state has its own special weave, style. pattern and material that they produce with pride.

Speaking Exclusively to Ten News. BJP MP Virender Kashyap Said,

The support systems, in terms budget allocation and policy implementation, weavers are forced to survive on local money lender on exorbitant interest rate. in a vicious circle of poverty, they usually caught up debt trap and ends in loss of human capital or suicides.
