SC appointed panel indicts former CBI chief, AAP stands vindicated

# CBI still a caged parrot

# Modi Govt should explain why Attorney General defended Sinha

Aam Aadmi Party’s stand about the subservient nature of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been vindicated once again today. The Supreme Court-appointed ML Sharma Committee probing former CBI Director Ranjit Sinha, has found him guilty of meeting with persons accused in the 2G scam, which the CBI was probing during his tenure as CBI Director.

The AAP has always maintained that the CBI is not an independent investigating agency and has been used by Central governments for convenient political purposes. The CBI Director under the former UPA Govt Ranjit Sinha has been found to have colluded with the persons his agency was investigating, since the scam accused were primarily close to the ruling party at the time, Congress. The ML Sharma’s Committee’s findings are a shocking indictment of the manner in which the CBI functions and highlights the failure of the Modi Govt in changing this situation.

The CBI today under the Modi Govt continues to be a ‘caged parrot’ used at will by the Govt to persecute opponents. The AAP demands that the Modi Govt clarify what steps have been taken to make the CBI an independent body. Before elections, Narendra Modi waxed eloquent about the CBI’s misuse by the Congress party, but how is his Govt’s misuse of the agency any different from that of the Congress?

Such is the unwillingness & discomfort of the Modi Govt to release the CBI from its control, that the Govt’s Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi actually defended the former Director Ranjit Sinha in the Supreme Court. Why is this Govt defending the Director when it has come to light that he met with and colluded with the accused of the 2G scam? What is the Modi Govt’s interest in protecting corrupt and criminal elements?

In light of this development in court, the matter of the CBI’s independence must be addressed immediately by the Modi Govt. The AAP demands that the CBI be made an independent body and end the blatant misuse of the central investigating agency.
