Academic Session on Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome Held at Sharda University

GREATER NOIDA News (23/12/2025): An academic programme focusing on one of the most pressing public health challenges of the present era—obesity and metabolic syndrome—was organized at the School of Medical Sciences and Research (SMS&R), Sharda University, on Sunday. The event, titled “Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome: Implications for Future Physicians,” aimed to enhance clinical understanding and preventive perspectives among medical students.
The session was coordinated by Dr. Ankita Kakkar, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, under the guidance of Dean Dr. Nirupma Gupta and Associate Dean Dr. Amit Singh Pawaiya, SMS&R. Faculty members and undergraduate medical students participated actively in the programme.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Mekhala Chandra, a renowned physician specializing in Obesity Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Longevity Medicine. Dr. Chandra, who is currently serving as Senior Consultant and Head of Department at TATA 1mg Weightwise, shared her clinical expertise and insights on the growing burden of obesity and metabolic disorders.
During her address, Dr. Chandra discussed the alarming rise in obesity and metabolic syndrome across age groups, emphasizing their association with long-term complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and reduced life expectancy. She highlighted the critical role of early identification, preventive interventions, lifestyle modification, and patient education in addressing these conditions effectively. The lecture also underscored the responsibility of future physicians in promoting holistic and preventive healthcare practices.
The session was interactive and well received, with students and faculty appreciating the practical, evidence-based approach adopted during the discussion. Participants found the lecture highly informative, contributing to improved clinical awareness and academic enrichment.
