New Delhi (India), 19th April 2023: In an interview, which aired on Sunday, DeepMind Technologies’ CEO discussed the possibilities of artificial intelligence. DeepMind Technologies is owned by Alphabet.
Demis Hassabis, the CEO of DeepMind, told CBS that he believes AI may eventually develop self-awareness.
He said, “Philosophers haven’t really settled on a definition of consciousness yet but if we mean self-awareness, and these kinds of things … I think there’s a possibility that AI one day could be.”
As of right now, only humans have the capacity for self-awareness, which includes having feelings, needs, and desires. Therefore, if AI attains this level of consciousness comparable to that of humans, it may have its own feelings, wants, and even desires. AI has only been able to comprehend human emotions up until now, so the idea of AI having its own feelings is completely novel.
Hassabis stated in the same interview that he considers AI to be “the most important invention that humanity will ever make.”
In 2010, Hassabis and cofounders Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman established DeepMind in London. Their objective was to develop AI systems that could carry out specific activities just as well as humans. The business was bought by Google in 2014, and after Google underwent a restructure, it became an Alphabet subsidiary.
