New Delhi (India), 21st April 2023: As it intensifies its research into artificial intelligence in an effort to compete with rival systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.O) is merging Google Brain and DeepMind.
The establishment of the new organisation, which will be headed by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, will enable “bold and responsible development of general AI,” according to a blog post written by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai on Thursday.
The transformer, a piece of technology that served as the foundation for some of OpenAI’s own work, was one of the high-profile projects completed by the teams that are being combined, according to Alphabet.
The Alphabet team will continue to work on “multimodal” AI, like the most recent model GPT-4 from OpenAI, which can respond to both text and picture inputs to create new material.
With a market share of over 80%, Google has long held the top spot in search, but Wall Street worries that the Alphabet subsidiary will lose ground to Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) in the quickly developing AI battle. Microsoft-funded OpenAI technology drives the upgraded Bing search engine from the competing software vendor.
In order to compete with ChatGPT, Alphabet also announced the introduction of Bard in February. On February 8, it lost $100 billion in value as a result of Bard providing false information in a promotional film and a lacklustre business event.
However Alphabet’s shares went up by 2% on Thursday after the blog post announcing the merger was released.
