Khemka’s transfer a bad signal for honest and upright officers

Aam Aadmi Party expresses shock over BJP’s Haryana government’s decision to transfer whistle blower IAS officer Ashok Khemka yet again. Mr. Khemka, a known anti-corruption crusader was moved to Department of Archeology and Museums as Secretary and Director General by an order of the Haryana government issued on Wednesday. Mr. Khemka’s new department is considered as cold storage for bureaucrats. Mr. Khemka was holding the position of Secretary and Transport Commissioner and had launched a drive against transport mafia. It was the first time in decades in Haryana that powerful dumper lobby was feeling the heat. This caused discomfort in power corridors and Mr. Khemka was transferred for the 46th time in his carrier.

It’s unfortunate that the BJP, which had made Mr. Khemka’s victimization by Congress’ Huda government an electoral issue in Haryana elections, is resorting to same tactics to shelter mafia in the state. Now it’s clear that raising Mr. Khemka’s victimization under Congress government before election by the BJP was only a political stunt. BJP is no different from Congress when it comes to institutionalizing corruption, shielding mafia and victimizing whistleblowers and honest officers.

The Aam Aadmi Party wants to remind the BJP that Mr. Khemka is the same officer who had exposed Mr. Robert Vadra’s shady land deals and had taken action against him. For political gains, the BJP had then declared him a hero and a crusader. It’s only after assuming power in Haryana that Mr. Khemka has become inconvenient to the BJP due to his commitment to the issue of transparency in government dealings and his zero-tolerance for corruption.

It’s not the only instance where an honest and upright officer is being victimized, officers in BJP ruled states and under the central government have been meted out similar treatment in the past. Chief Vigilance Officer of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Mr. Sanjeev Chaturvedi was victimized by senior BJP functionaries. Not only was he removed as AIMMS CVO, BJP MP JP Nadda, who was running a campaign against him was made Health Minister. Mr. Chaturvedi was shifted to a non-sensitive post.

When Aam Aadmi Government took charge in Delhi, it placed a request before the BJP government at the Centre to shift Mr. Chaturvedi to Delhi Government on deputation, but the request is yet to be responded to. The signal is clear that if the officers do not surrender before the corrupt elements, they will be victimized by BJP and Congress governments alike.
