Assam, August 20th, 2022: After incessant rains caused heavy floods in Assam, government has started working towards relief and rehabilitation measures. This year’s flood came in two waves affecting 90 lakh people in Assam and has been the worst in the northeastern state in terms of fatalities, claiming over 200 lives, of which 70 were children.
The third wave of floods hit Assam earlier this month affecting more than 35,000 people across four districts. Many houses, schools, roads, and fields are said to be damaged because of the continuous rain and floods.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced the disbursement of Rs.119.10 crores as flood rehabilitation fund through direct benefit transfer to 2,04,348 families whose houses have been completely or partially damaged in the recent floods.
He also announced that Rs. 1250 will be given to each ‘Orunodoi’ (social welfare scheme) beneficiary this year and six lakh more beneficiaries will be added to the scheme this year.
“Till now, 180 people across 34 districts have lost their lives due to floods & 19 people have died in landslides”, said CM Sarma.
Our assessment of infrastructure damage is underway and we will start infrastructure rebuilding works from September this year, he added.
