Busy markets of Delhi remain closed as Traders’ Bandh, supported by the Delhi Traders’ Congress, hits businesses in the Capital.

NEW DELHI, June 30—Most of the busy markets in Delhi remained closed today as the Delhi Traders’ Bandh, which was supported by the Delhi Traders’ Congress, received overwhelming support to protest against the implementation of GST in its present form, which will signal the ruin of small and medium-sized industries and create large-scale unemployment.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Ajay Maken had said at a press conference yesterday that the  Congress party will not accept the GST in its present form, and as a protest the Congress party will not attend the joint session of Parliament on GST, to be held tonight.

Shri Ajay Maken said the Congress party was with the traders in their protest against the hasty implementation of GST in its present format. The convenors of the Delhi Traders’ Congress like Murali Mani, Anil Kukreja and Ajay Arora led the protest bandhs in various busy markets of Delhi, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Kamla Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Connaught Place etc.

Shri Maken said the DPCC, on its own, will also hold district-level demonstrations against the GST. He said the Congress party was with the small and medium-size businessmen who would be adversely affected with the implementation of the GST in its present format.

Shri Maken said Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was applying doubles standards on GST as he had taken a different stand on GST when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The traders of Delhi are agitated that the NDA Government was rushing through GST as it was ill-prepared for it as no arrangements have been made to address the outcry of small traders and business houses. The traders strongly feel that the Government’s ground work for GST is even worse than what it was during demonetisation.
