Mumbai (India), March 19, 2023: In a tragic incident, a woman lost her life after being hit by a speeding car while on her morning walk on Worli Sea Face in Mumbai on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Rajalakshmi Ram Krishnan, was a resident of the Dadar Matunga area and CEO of the technology company, Altruist Technologies Private Ltd. She was a regular runner and had recently participated in the Tata Mumbai Marathon 2023.
The accident took place near Worli Milk Dairy at around 630 a.m. on Sunday, according to the police. The impact of the collision was so powerful that the victim was flung several feet into the air and succumbed to head injuries.
The driver of the car, identified as Sumer Merchant, was arrested on the spot following the accident. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle, a Tata Nexon EV, was traveling at a very high speed.
The police have yet to decide on the IPC sections and have ordered a medical examination to ascertain whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Sumer informed the police that he lost control of the vehicle and hit the divider before colliding with the woman.
In another unfortunate incident, at least 12 passengers were injured after a private bus fell off a small bridge in Pune, Maharashtra. The driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle, which led to the mishap. The injured were immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the need for caution and safety on the roads, especially during the early hours when many people are out for their morning walks or commutes. The authorities must take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians and commuters on the roads.
